National Elk Refuge
The National Elk Refuge is a huge protected area near Jackson where thousands of elk spend the winter. It gives the animals a safe place to rest and eat when the mountains are buried in snow.
It is famous for its winter sleigh rides that carry families right out among the giant elk herds. Seeing thousands of elk together against the snowy mountains is a sight visitors never forget.
Thousands of elk
Each winter around seven thousand elk come down from the high mountains to gather on the refuge. In spring they head back up to the peaks, and the meadows fill with birds instead.
Sleigh rides
Horse-drawn sleighs glide quietly across the snow so people can watch the elk up close. Bundled up in blankets, families feel like they have stepped into a winter storybook.
Other wildlife
Besides elk, the refuge is home to bison, bighorn sheep, coyotes, and even bald eagles. Bird lovers come in warmer months to spot trumpeter swans on the ponds.
