Chincoteague and Assateague Islands
Chincoteague and its wild neighbor Assateague are seaside islands on Virginia's eastern shore. They are best known for the herds of wild ponies that roam free among the marshes and beaches.
The islands are famous for the yearly Pony Swim, when the ponies splash across a narrow channel of water. Visitors also love the quiet beaches, the tall lighthouse, and watching birds and ponies in the wild.
Wild ponies
Small, hardy ponies have lived on Assateague Island for hundreds of years, grazing on beach grass. Seeing them wander freely along the dunes and shore is a special treat that children never forget.
The famous Pony Swim
Every July the ponies swim across the water to Chincoteague in a beloved tradition watched by big crowds. This heartwarming event was made famous by a classic children's book called Misty of Chincoteague.
Beaches and birds
The islands have calm, sandy beaches and a wildlife refuge full of herons, egrets, and shorebirds. A red-and-white lighthouse stands among the pines, and trails let you explore the peaceful wild land.
