Wind Cave National Park
Wind Cave National Park protects one of the longest and most complex caves in the world, hidden beneath rolling prairie. Above ground it is a peaceful grassland, and below ground it is a maze of winding tunnels.
It is famous for a rare cave decoration called boxwork, thin fins of rock that criss-cross the ceilings like honeycomb. Most of the world's boxwork is found right here in this cave.
The Breathing Cave
The cave got its name because wind blows in and out of its natural opening, almost like it is breathing. This happens as the air pressure changes between the cave and the outside world.
Ranger Tours
Visitors explore the cave on guided tours led by park rangers who share stories and point out the special rock shapes. The tours are cool and quiet, staying about 53 degrees all year long.
Prairie Above
On the surface, herds of bison, elk, and prairie dogs live in one of the last mixed-grass prairies in the country. Families can watch these animals graze in the open fields.
