The Breakers
The Breakers is a grand seaside mansion in Newport built by the wealthy Vanderbilt family in the 1890s. It has 70 rooms, sparkling chandeliers, and gardens overlooking the ocean.
It is the most famous of Newport's Gilded Age mansions and shows how America's richest families once lived. Visitors love walking through the fancy rooms and along the Cliff Walk right beside it.
History
The Breakers was finished in 1895 as a summer home for Cornelius Vanderbilt II and his family. It was built to feel like a palace from Italy.
Scenery
The mansion sits on a cliff above the Atlantic Ocean with wide green lawns. From the back terrace you can watch waves crashing on the rocks below.
Activities
Families can take an audio tour that tells fun stories about each room. Right outside is the Cliff Walk, a famous ocean path for a stroll.
