Smith Rock State Park
Smith Rock State Park is a dramatic canyon of tall reddish cliffs with a winding river at the bottom. The towering rock walls rise straight up, making a breathtaking scene in the high desert of central Oregon.
It is known around the world as one of the birthplaces of modern rock climbing, with thousands of climbing routes. Families also come to hike, watch climbers, and spot golden eagles soaring above.
A Climber's Paradise
Climbers from everywhere come to scale the steep rock walls using ropes and safety gear. Watching them inch up the cliffs is exciting even if you stay on the ground.
River and Trails
The Crooked River curves through the park with trails running alongside it. A famous trail called Misery Ridge climbs high for one of the best views in Oregon.
Desert Wildlife
Keep your eyes open for golden eagles, river otters, and mule deer that live in the canyon. The high desert is sunny and dry, so bring water and a hat.
