Crater Lake National Park
Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States, formed when a giant volcano collapsed almost 8,000 years ago. Rain and snow slowly filled the huge bowl, creating water so blue it looks like a painting.
People come from all over the world to see its amazing deep-blue color and the little island called Wizard Island that pokes out of the water. It is one of the most photographed natural wonders in Oregon.
How It Formed
The lake sits inside a volcano called Mount Mazama that blew its top and collapsed long ago. No rivers flow in or out, so the water stays super clean and clear.
Snowy Weather
This is one of the snowiest places in America, getting about 43 feet of snow each year. Summer is the best time to visit when the roads around the rim are open.
Fun Things To Do
Families can drive the scenic Rim Drive, hike gentle trails, and take a boat ride out to Wizard Island. In winter people enjoy snowshoeing across the sparkling snow.
