White Sands is a desert park covered in soft, snow-white sand dunes made of gypsum. It is the largest gypsum dune field in the whole world.
Families love sledding down the smooth white hills just like sliding on snow. The sand stays cool to the touch, and sunsets turn the whole desert pink and gold.
You can sit on a round plastic sled and zoom down the tall dunes. Kids climb back up and go again and again all afternoon.
Days can be very hot, so mornings and evenings are the best times to visit. The white sand does not get hot like normal beach sand, so bare feet feel fine.
Special pale lizards and mice have turned white to hide in the sand. If you look closely you might spot their tiny tracks in the morning.
