Split Rock Lighthouse
Split Rock Lighthouse stands on a tall cliff above Lake Superior on Minnesota's North Shore. It was built in 1910 to help ships find their way safely through storms.
It is one of the most photographed lighthouses in America because it sits high on a rocky cliff with a huge blue lake all around. Visitors can climb inside, see the old lamp, and learn how keepers lived long ago.
Why It Was Built
After a big storm sank many ships in 1905, people built this lighthouse so its bright light could warn sailors away from the rocks.
