Boundary Waters Canoe Area

Boundary Waters Canoe Area

The Boundary Waters is a huge protected wilderness of more than a thousand lakes and streams in northern Minnesota. There are no roads or cars, so people travel by canoe and carry their boats between lakes.

It is loved as one of the best places in the world for canoe trips, with clear water and quiet forests full of wildlife. Campers paddle for days without seeing a town, sleeping under a blanket of stars.

Canoe Adventures

Families paddle from lake to lake and walk short trails called portages, carrying their canoe over their heads to the next water.

Quiet and Clean

There are no motors allowed in most of the area, so all you hear is birds, wind, and the splash of your paddle.

Starry Skies

Because it is so far from city lights, the night sky is one of the darkest in the country and glitters with countless stars.
