Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Sleeping Bear Dunes is a stretch of towering sand dunes along the shore of Lake Michigan. The golden hills rise hundreds of feet above the bright blue water.

It is loved for the giant Dune Climb, where kids run and roll down the soft sand, and for the beautiful Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. The views from the top are so pretty they were once voted the most beautiful place in America.

The Dune Climb

Families climb up huge hills of soft sand and then race back down, which is tiring going up but a giggling adventure coming down.

Native Legend

The name comes from an Ojibwe story about a mother bear who waited for her cubs, and a dune is said to look like the sleeping bear.
