Portland Head Light
Portland Head Light is a tall white lighthouse that stands on the rocky shore in Cape Elizabeth, just south of Portland. It has been guiding ships safely into the harbor for more than two hundred years.
It is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and one of the most photographed lighthouses in all of America. People love the grassy park around it, the crashing waves, and the little museum inside the old keeper's house.
History
The lighthouse first lit its lamp in 1791, back when it was ordered by George Washington to help sailors find their way.
Scenery
The lighthouse sits in Fort Williams Park, a big green space with picnic spots, walking paths, and wide views of the sea.
Fun facts
A small museum in the keeper's house shows old lamps and lenses, and kids love spotting big ships passing by on the water.
