Strataca Underground Salt Museum
Strataca is an amazing museum located 650 feet underground inside a working salt mine in Hutchinson. Visitors ride an elevator deep below the earth to explore tunnels carved from solid salt.
It is famous as one of the only places on Earth where families can tour a real salt mine this deep. Kids love riding the underground train and dark ride, and touching salt walls that formed millions of years ago.
History
The salt here formed from an ancient sea that dried up 275 million years ago. Miners have dug salt from this spot for over a hundred years.
Activities
Families ride an underground train and a dark ride through the salt tunnels. You can even take home a chunk of real salt you dig yourself.
Scenery
Deep below the surface it is always cool and quiet, with sparkling salt walls all around. The mine keeps a steady temperature no matter the season above.
