Effigy Mounds National Monument
Effigy Mounds National Monument in northeast Iowa protects more than 200 ancient earthen mounds built by Native Americans long ago. Some mounds are shaped like bears and birds and can only be seen well from the trails above the Mississippi River.
It is famous and loved because these giant animal-shaped mounds are sacred works of art made by Native people hundreds of years ago. Walking the peaceful forest trails to see them, with grand views of the river, feels quiet and special.
