Stone Mountain Park
Stone Mountain Park is built around a giant dome of gray granite that rises high above the trees near Atlanta. Families can ride a cable car to the top, walk the trails, and enjoy games, shows, and a big lake below.
It is one of Georgia's most visited spots because the mountain is one of the largest exposed pieces of granite on Earth. People love the summer laser light shows, the scenic railroad, and the amazing view from the very top.
Scenery
The bare granite dome climbs about 825 feet above the ground, and from the summit you can see the whole forest and the Atlanta skyline on a clear day. Wildflowers and rare little plants grow in tiny pools right on the rock.
Fun Activities
Kids can ride the Summit Skyride cable car, climb ropes courses, splash at the water play area, and take a train ride around the mountain. In the evening a colorful laser and fireworks show lights up the rock.
History
The granite here formed deep underground more than 300 million years ago and slowly wore up to the surface. Long ago the stone was quarried and shipped far away to help build famous buildings and monuments.
