Fort Delaware State Park
Fort Delaware is an old stone fortress on Pea Patch Island in the middle of the Delaware River. You reach it by a short ferry ride, which is half the fun.
It is famous as a Civil War fort where costumed guides act out life from long ago. Families love firing demonstrations, dark tunnels, and the big heron colony on the island.
Ferry ride
A boat carries visitors across the river to the island fort. The breezy ride offers great views of the water and passing ships.
Living history
Costumed guides show how soldiers cooked, marched, and fired cannons in the 1860s. Kids can peek into dim tunnels and explore the thick stone walls.
Wildlife
Pea Patch Island is home to one of the biggest heron and egret colonies on the East Coast. In summer the marsh fills with wading birds nesting in the trees.
