Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve
Wrangell-St. Elias is the largest national park in the United States, bigger than some whole countries. It is a giant land of towering volcanoes, massive glaciers, and rugged mountains in eastern Alaska.
This park is famous for its colossal size and the historic red buildings of the old Kennecott copper mine. Visitors love hiking on the Root Glacier and exploring a place so wild and empty it feels like the edge of the world.
Biggest of All
This one park is so huge it could hold Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Switzerland all inside it. Nine of the sixteen tallest mountains in the whole United States rise up within its borders.
Kennecott Mine
Long ago, miners dug tons of copper from these mountains and built a bright red town called Kennecott. Today you can tour the old wooden buildings and imagine life in a busy mining camp.
Glacier Walking
With a guide and special spiky shoes called crampons, families can walk right on top of the Root Glacier. You can peek into deep blue cracks and hear water rushing under the ice.
