Castillo San Felipe del Morro
El Morro is a giant six-level fortress built on a cliff at the tip of Old San Juan, guarding the entrance to the harbor. Its thick stone walls and round watchtowers have stood strong against the sea for centuries.
Kids and grown-ups love running across its huge grassy lawn to fly kites and peeking through the little stone lookout towers. It is famous as a symbol of Puerto Rico and a special world heritage site.
History
The fort was built starting almost 500 years ago to protect the island from enemy ships and pirates. Soldiers once watched the sea day and night from its tall walls.
Scenery
From the top you can see the wide ocean, crashing waves, and ships sailing into the bay. The little round watchtowers, called garitas, make perfect spots for photos.
Activities
The big open field in front of the fort is a favorite place to fly colorful kites on breezy days. Inside, you can explore ramps, tunnels, and cannons that feel like a real adventure.
