Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)
Rainbow Mountain, called Vinicunca, is a tall Andes peak striped in bands of red, gold, green, and purple. The colors come from different minerals in the earth stacked over millions of years.
It has become one of Peru's most photographed natural wonders because it truly looks like a painted rainbow. People love the challenge of hiking so high and the jaw-dropping view at the top.
Scenery
The mountain glows with stripes of many colors, brightest when the sun is out. Snowy peaks and wide open valleys surround it on every side.
Wildlife
Wild alpacas and vicunas graze on the high grasslands along the trail. These soft, gentle animals are cousins of the llama and love the cold air.
Weather
The air up here is very thin and chilly, so warm clothes and slow steps help a lot. Mornings are usually clearest, before afternoon clouds roll in.
