Monarch Butterfly Reserve
The Monarch Butterfly Reserve is a special forest in the mountains west of Mexico City. Every winter millions of orange butterflies come here to rest.
It is famous because the butterflies fly thousands of miles all the way from Canada and the United States. When they gather, the trees turn orange and the air fills with fluttering wings.

Monarch butterflies travel farther than almost any other insect on Earth. They fly for weeks to reach these warm mountain forests.
Trees of Orange
So many butterflies land together that whole trees look bright orange. When the sun warms them, they all take off at once like confetti.
Quiet Cool Forest
The reserve is high up where the air is cool and the tall fir trees stay green. Visitors walk softly and speak quietly so the butterflies feel safe.
