Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is a giant ancient Maya city in the Yucatan jungle. Its most famous building is a tall stone pyramid called El Castillo, or the Temple of Kukulcan.

It is loved because it is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and thousands of visitors come every year. On two special days each year the sunlight makes a snake shadow slither down the pyramid steps.

Ancient History

The Maya people built this city more than a thousand years ago. They were amazing at math and studying the stars, and the pyramid was built like a giant calendar.

The Sound Trick

If you clap your hands in front of the big pyramid, the echo sounds like a chirping bird. The Maya were very clever with sound and shapes.

Weather and Jungle

The area is warm and green all year, and it can get very hot at midday. Bring a hat, water, and sunscreen when you explore the ruins.
