Kanuku Mountains
The Kanuku Mountains are a range of forest-covered hills rising out of the Rupununi grasslands. Their name means forest in a local Indigenous language, and they are packed with wildlife.
People love the Kanukus because more than half of all Guyana's bird and mammal species live here. It is a peaceful wildlife wonderland reached by boat along quiet, winding rivers.
A World of Birds
Hundreds of kinds of birds live in the Kanukus, from tiny hummingbirds to huge harpy eagles. Bird lovers come from far away just to hear the morning chorus echo through the trees.
Giant River Otters
Families of giant river otters, as long as a grown-up is tall, play and fish in the rivers here. They squeak and splash together, making them one of the most fun animals to watch.
Rivers Through the Forest
The best way to explore is by boat along the Rupununi River that curves around the mountains. Gliding quietly on the water, you can spot monkeys, macaws, and basking caimans.
