Essequibo River
The Essequibo is the largest river in Guyana, flowing all the way from the far south to the Atlantic Ocean. It is so wide in places that it is scattered with hundreds of green islands.
People love the Essequibo for its jungle boat trips, hidden waterfalls, and river islands full of history. It is the main watery highway that connects the coast to the deep interior.
A River of Islands
Near its mouth the Essequibo grows so wide it holds islands bigger than some whole countries. Boats weave between these leafy islands where birds nest and fishermen cast their nets.
Rushing Rapids
Upriver the calm water breaks into bubbling rapids and small falls tumbling over dark rocks. Guides carefully steer boats through the whitewater, which is thrilling and splashy fun.
Life Along the Water
River villages, old forts, and floating markets sit along the banks of the mighty Essequibo. Otters, caimans, and colorful birds all make their homes in and around the water.
