Santa Ana Volcano (Ilamatepec)
Santa Ana Volcano, also called Ilamatepec, is the tallest volcano in El Salvador and one of the most popular to climb. At its top sits a stunning crater lake that glows a bright turquoise-green color.
Hikers come from all over the world for the reward at the summit: a colorful, steaming crater lake and huge views of lakes and other volcanoes below. It is famous as one of the most beautiful and doable volcano hikes in Central America.
The Hike
The climb takes about two hours up a clear trail through forest and open rocky slopes, usually with a friendly guide and a park ranger. It is challenging but doable for healthy kids and families who take it slow.
The Crater Lake
At the top you peer down into a wide crater holding a lake colored bright green by minerals in the water. Wisps of steam sometimes rise from the edges, reminding everyone the volcano is still gently alive.
Weather Up High
The valley below is hot, but the summit is cool and windy, so a light jacket is a smart idea. Mornings usually have the clearest skies, so most hikes start early to beat the afternoon clouds.
