Chimborazo
Chimborazo is the tallest mountain in Ecuador, a giant snow-covered volcano in the Andes. Its peak is so high it pokes up above the clouds.
Chimborazo is famous as the point on Earth that is closest to the sun and the stars, because it sits near the middle of the planet where the Earth bulges out. People are amazed that its top is even farther into space than Mount Everest.
Closest to the Stars
Because the Earth is a little fatter around the middle, the top of Chimborazo is the spot on the planet nearest to outer space. That makes it a very special mountain.
Fuzzy Vicunas
On the grassy slopes live vicunas, gentle wild cousins of the llama with soft golden fur. They graze calmly across the wide open land.
Snow and Cold Air
The very top is always covered in ice and snow, and the air is crisp and cold even though Ecuador is a warm country. Warm clothes make a visit comfy.
