Colonial City of Santo Domingo
The Colonial City (Zona Colonial) is the oldest European-built town in the Americas, sitting in the heart of Santo Domingo. Its cobblestone streets, stone forts, and old churches were built more than 500 years ago.
It is famous as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is loved for its living history, colorful plazas, and friendly cafes. Walking here feels like stepping back in time while music and laughter fill the streets.
History
The very first cathedral, hospital, and university of the Americas were all built here in the early 1500s. Kids can see the mighty Alcazar de Colon, a palace once home to the family of Christopher Columbus.
Things to Do
Families love riding little open trolleys, tasting fresh fruit ice cream, and exploring the old stone fort by the sea. Every evening the main square fills with street performers and dancers.
Scenery
The buildings glow in warm shades of yellow, pink, and coral, with bright flowers spilling over balconies. At sunset the old walls turn golden and the whole city feels magical.
