Laguna Colorada
Laguna Colorada is a shallow mountain lake with bright red water, sitting inside a wild highland reserve in southern Bolivia. Its unusual color comes from tiny living things and minerals in the water.
It is famous because thousands of pink flamingos wade through its red-and-white water, making it look like a painting. Travelers cross the desert to see the flamingos, steaming geysers, and strange rock shapes nearby.
Pink Flamingos
Big flocks of flamingos feed in the shallow water, standing on their thin legs and turning ever pinker from the food they eat. Watching them fly up together is a beautiful sight.
Red and White Water
The lake glows red from tiny algae and minerals, while patches of white borax float on top like little islands. The colors change through the day as the sun moves.
Cold High Desert
This place is very high and very cold, especially in the early morning when frost sparkles on the ground. Nearby you can find bubbling mud pools and hot steam rising from the earth.
