Xunantunich
Xunantunich is an ancient Maya ruin set on a hilltop near the town of San Ignacio. To reach it you cross a small river on a hand-cranked ferry, which is an adventure all its own.
It is famous for its tall pyramid called El Castillo, which is decorated with carved figures of the sun and moon. People love the wide views from the top and the friendly monkeys in the nearby trees.
The River Ferry
A little ferry pulled by hand takes cars and people across the Mopan River to reach the ruins. Kids love watching the ferry operator turn the big wheel.
El Castillo
This tall pyramid stands about 130 feet high and once had a special stone band with carved faces. From the top you can see all the way into the country of Guatemala.
Warm Weather
The area is warm and green, with a dry season from November to May that is great for visiting. Bring a hat and water, because the sun shines brightly on the open hilltop.
