Great Blue Hole
The Great Blue Hole is a giant round sinkhole in the sea, filled with deep dark-blue water. It sits near the center of Lighthouse Reef, about 60 miles off the coast of Belize.
It is famous as one of the most amazing diving spots on Earth, with a perfect circle shape you can see from the sky. Divers and explorers love it for its clear water, giant underwater caves, and gentle reef sharks.
How It Formed
Long ago this was a dry cave on land, and its roof fell in to make a deep round hole. When the sea rose, water filled it up and turned it a beautiful blue.
Sea Animals
Friendly reef sharks, colorful fish, and sea turtles swim around the edges of the hole. Divers often float quietly and watch them glide by.
Best Time to Visit
The water is calmest and clearest from April to June, which makes it easy to see far below. The weather is warm and sunny almost all year round.
