Caracol is a huge ancient Maya city hidden deep in the rainforest of western Belize. Its tallest pyramid, called Caana or Sky Palace, is one of the biggest buildings in the whole country.
It is famous because thousands of people once lived here and built tall temples and wide plazas. Visitors love climbing the great pyramid and seeing the green jungle stretch out for miles below.
Caana rises over 140 feet high, taller than a 13-story building. From the top you can see nothing but treetops in every direction.
The forest around the ruins is full of howler monkeys, bright toucans, and colorful butterflies. If you listen closely you can hear the monkeys roar in the trees.
Long ago Caracol was home to more than 100,000 people who grew food on hillside farms. They carved messages into stone that scientists still read today.
