Nieuw Nickerie is a river town in the far west of Suriname, close to the border with Guyana. It is the heart of the country's rice-growing region.
You can watch big green rice fields stretch to the horizon and spot lots of birds. Boats and a ferry connect the town to neighboring countries.
This area grows most of Suriname's rice. The flat green paddies are a pretty sight, especially at sunset.
The wet fields and nearby coast attract many colorful birds, including scarlet ibis. Bird lovers come from far away to see them.
