Asuncion is the capital and biggest city of Paraguay, and one of the oldest cities in all of South America. It sits right on the Paraguay River and is the heart of the country's government, culture, and business.
You can stroll along the colorful riverfront, visit the pink Palace of the Lopez where the president works, and explore old plazas full of history. Kids love the botanical garden and zoo, and the busy markets full of tasty snacks.

The historic center is full of grand old buildings, like the Cabildo and the National Pantheon of the Heroes, where you can learn all about Paraguay's past.

Try chipa, a warm cheesy bread ring, and sopa paraguaya, which is actually a fluffy cornbread and not a soup at all!
