This Great Buddha, called Daibutsu, has sat quietly for more than seven hundred years and is one of Japan's most loved statues.

He is made of bronze, cast in many pieces that were carefully joined together to build one giant peaceful figure.
Look closer
Notice that he sits outdoors under the open sky; a great wooden hall once covered him, but ocean waves washed it away long ago.

He sits at the Kotoku-in temple in the town of Kamakura, Japan.
Fun fact
He is about 44 feet tall and completely hollow inside, so visitors can even step in and see how he was built.
