Leighton painted it in 1895 near the end of his life, and its beautiful color has made it one of the best loved English paintings.
The style
He let the see-through orange fabric fold and swirl like flames, which is how the painting got its fiery name.

Look at the top right for a branch of oleander, a lovely flowering plant that Leighton added for its beauty.

For many years the painting was almost forgotten and once sold very cheaply, but today it is treasured as a masterpiece.
