David

Michelangelo · 1504 · Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence
David

The artist

Michelangelo Buonarroti, one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance.

What you see

A giant standing figure of the young hero David, calm and alert, right before his famous fight with the giant Goliath.

The story

Michelangelo finished it in 1504 when he was young, and the people of Florence loved it so much they made it a proud symbol of their city.

The style

It was carved from a single huge block of white marble that other sculptors had already given up on as too thin and flawed.

Look closer

Look at his big hands and the sling draped over his shoulder, and how his eyes stare far away as if watching for Goliath.

Where to see it

You can see the real David today inside the Galleria dell'Accademia museum in Florence, Italy.

Fun fact

He is about 17 feet tall, roughly three grown-ups standing on each other's shoulders.
