What you see
A slender young David standing calmly with a hat and boots, resting after his surprising victory over the giant Goliath.
The story
Made around 1440, this was the first free-standing bronze statue like this created since the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans.
The style
Instead of carving stone, Donatello cast it in bronze by pouring hot melted metal into a mold, then polishing the cooled surface.
Look closer
Notice his fancy shepherd's hat with a leafy wreath and his soft boots, unusual touches for a hero at rest.
Where to see it
You can see it at the Bargello museum in Florence, Italy, the same city that loves Michelangelo's David.

There are two famous Davids in Florence, this smaller bronze one by Donatello and the giant marble one by Michelangelo.
