Friedrich painted it around 1818, and many people believe he made it soon after his wedding, so it may show him with his new wife.

He framed the view with jagged white rocks and green branches, like a window that draws your eye out to the sparkling water.
Look closer
Look closely and you can spot two tiny white sailboats far out on the sea below the cliffs.
Where to see it
It hangs in the Museum Oskar Reinhart in the town of Winterthur, Switzerland.
Fun fact
The real chalk cliffs on Rugen are still there today, and visitors climb up to enjoy the very same view.
