Who it is

• Scientific name: Mesocricetus auratus
• Family & relatives: A small pet rodent in the family Cricetidae, related to mice, voles, and other burrowing rodents.
• How to spot it: A tiny, fuzzy animal with a short tail, round ears, bright eyes, and stretchy cheek pouches.

Its body & abilities

• Size: The golden hamster is about 13 to 18 cm long; some pet hamsters are even smaller.
• Weight: Usually about 100 to 150 g (3.5 to 5 oz).
• Body & adaptations: It has big stretchy cheek pouches that can hold lots of food, and front teeth that grow all its life.
• Top speed: Quick and busy, it can scurry fast and loves to run on its wheel.
• Strength: Tiny but tireless, a hamster can run several kilometers on its wheel in a single night.
• Senses: Poor eyesight but excellent smell, hearing, and sensitive whiskers to feel its way in the dark.
