• Scientific name: Canis lupus familiaris
• Family & relatives: A working dog breed, part of the domestic dog family, whose distant wild ancestor is the gray wolf.
• How to spot it: A strong, square-jawed dog with a short shiny coat of tan or brindle, often with a white chest and dark face.
