Who it is

• Scientific name: Ramphastos toco
• Family & relatives: A tropical bird in the family Ramphastidae; its relatives are other toucans and toucanets, and more distantly woodpeckers.
• How to spot it: A black bird with a white throat and a huge, bright orange bill that everyone recognizes.

Its body & abilities

• Size: About 55 to 65 cm long, including its very large bill.
• Weight: Around 500 to 860 g (about 1 to 2 lb).
• Body & adaptations: Its giant bill is light and hollow inside, and it helps the toucan reach fruit and stay cool.
• Top speed: It is not a strong flier, moving between trees with short bursts of flapping and gliding.
• Strength: Its long bill acts like a handy tool to pluck fruit from branches too thin to stand on.
• Senses: It has sharp color vision to spot ripe fruit and good hearing to keep in touch with its flock.
• Growing up: Chicks hatch pink, bare, and helpless in a tree hole, and grow their feathers and big bill over several weeks.

Where it lives
