Who it is

• Scientific name: Felis catus
• Family & relatives: A breed of domestic cat, related to all other house cats and, far back, to wild cats.
• How to spot it: A very large, fluffy cat with a long shaggy coat, tufted ears, big paws, and a long bushy tail.

Its body & abilities

• Size: One of the biggest house cats, often about 25 to 40 cm tall and very long from nose to tail.
• Weight: Usually about 5 to 8 kg (11 to 18 lb), with males larger than females.
• Body & adaptations: Its thick, water-resistant fur and big furry paws help it stay warm and walk on snow like snowshoes.
• Top speed: Quick and nimble, it can sprint and pounce with surprising speed in short bursts.
• Strength: Strong and athletic, it is a great climber and jumper despite its large size.
• Senses: It has sharp night vision, keen hearing, and sensitive whiskers that help it feel its way in the dark.
